How to Choose the Perfect String Lights for Your Wedding

String lights are the most versatile decoration in wedding planning. They cost a fraction of what a draped fabric ceiling would, and they look incredible in photos. Here's how to choose well.

Match the bulb to the venue

For barn or rustic venues, large G40 or G50 globe bulbs in clear glass deliver that warm, vintage glow guests expect. For elegant garden weddings, micro-LED fairy lights on a thin copper wire disappear into the foliage and let the natural setting shine.

Color temperature matters

Stick to 2200K – 2700K (warm white). Anything cooler will make food and skin tones look clinical in photos. Avoid color-changing options unless you specifically want a club vibe for the late-night dance floor.

Calculate length the right way

Measure the longest dimension of your space, then add 30% for swag (the natural droop between anchor points), plus enough cord to reach the nearest outlet. Most couples underestimate by half.

Plan your power

  • Plug-in lights need outlets within 25–50 ft of every endpoint.
  • Battery-powered fairy strands work for centerpieces and inside floral arches.
  • For remote outdoor sites, ask your venue about generator placement.

Where to place them

Ceremony

Hang fairy lights inside a wedding arch, or backlight an aisle with curtains of lights along trees.

Reception dining

Overhead canopies above tables — guests will feel held in a warm pocket of light.

Dance floor

A dense canopy directly over the dance floor draws people to it like a magnet.

The most important rule: do a test run at the venue at least one week before. Lights look completely different at dusk than they do mid-morning when most planning happens.
